A) Anything that causes inadequate milk removal from the breast leading to local milk stasis increases the risk of mastitis.

-Things that cause the baby to suck poorly, e.g.
–Cleft lip or cleft palate.
–Short frenulum in baby (tongue tie)
>Mother related factors
Sore nipples
Missed feeding
Restriction from a tight bra
Use of a manual breast pump (possibly doesn’t empty as well)
Infant attachment difficulties
Primiparity
B) Anything that increases risk of infection e.g. breaking the skin barrier, decreasing immune function, etc
Nipple piercing
Cracked nipples
Poor maternal nutrition
Previous mastitis
Yeast infection
Plastic-backed breast pads
