Risk Factors for primary hypertension in children and adolescents

  • BMI is the strongest risk factor for HTN in children and adolescents.  The prevalence of HTN in obese children is 11%, which is more than double that of the general pediatric population (reported at 1%–5%).
  • Family history of hypertension,
  • Low birth weight,
  • Male sex
  • Certain ethnic backgrounds.
