“Corticosteroids, either orally or parenterally, are the first-line treatment for acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis (MS) (SOR A). A Cochrane review found no significant differences in outcomes based on the route of administration. Disease-modifying agents such as interferon beta, glatiramer, and immunosuppressants such as fingolimod may decrease the frequency of exacerbations and slow the progression of MS but are not the agents of first choice for treatment of acute flareups.” ABFM
