The following are generally agreed-upon initial workup of the hypertensive patient. Uptodate has a great article for consultation.
The following tests should be performed in all patients with newly diagnosed hypertension :
- History & Physical
- CMP (Electrolytes, BUN/creatinine, eGFR)
- Fasting glucose
- CBC
- Urinalysis
- Lipid profile (total and HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides)
- Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Other tests to consider
- Moderately increased albuminuria (formerly called “microalbuminuria”)
- Echocardiography is a more sensitive means of identifying the presence of LV hypertrophy than an ECG. It is indicated in patients with clinically evident HF or if LV dysfunction or if CAD is suspected.
