Cmd + Shift + 3 to take a picture of the entire screen.
Cmd + Shift + 4 to get cross hairs that allow you to drag and select a portion of the screen to take.
In both cases, you will hear a snapshot sound like you have taken a picture. The photo will be on the desktop.
