To order lab-work for a patient, insurance companies want to see an active diagnosis to justify the labs that they will pay for. You can’t just order labs for screening or with annual exam.
Here are some diagnosis to look for in your patient that will allow you to order labs and have them paid. Of course, only use them when appropriate.
- Z79.899, Long-term drug therapy. You can order CBC and CMP under these.
- Obesity (different stages). You can order CBC, TSH, etc. under that.
- Z20.2, At risk of Sexually Transmitted Infection. You can order STI tests under that.
You can also search “at risk of” in the diagnostic search box in your EHR and that will bring up other diagnoses.
